Crete is the largest and among the most popular Greek islands. It is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and can be considered either a large island or a small continent.

The island offers several different kinds of activities such as:

Heraklion Archaeological Museum

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum which is located in the center of the city is one of the largest and most important museums in Greece and among the most important museums in Europe.

It hosts representative artifacts from all  periods of Cretan prehistory and history, covering a chronological span of over 5.500 years. The singularly important Minoan collection contains unique examples of Minoan art and many of them are true masterpieces. A good example is the unique Minoan Seals of the “Metaxas Collection” which is located on the first floor of the museum.

Cretaquarium

Cretaquarium or Thalassocosmos is an aquarium located near the town of Gournes (at the former American base) and is only 22km from our villa. Its exhibits focus on the marine fauna of the Mediterranean region and include sea organisms from over 250 species in more than 60 tanks.

Natural History Museum of Crete

The Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC) in Heraklion operates under the auspices of the University of Crete. Its aim is the stud, protection and promotion of the diverse flora and fauna of the Eastern Mediterranean region. The museum is based on a restored industrial building. The NHMC was awarded by the Academy of Athens with the Benaki award for “its diverse educational research, wiriting and publishing work, its exemplary organization and its promotion of scientific research and training.”

Nikos Kazantzakis Museum

The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum located in Myrtia village in the Heraklion regional unit of Crete is 20 km from our villa and is dedicated to the life and work of the famous writer/philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis (perhaps best known for his novel Zorba the Greek).
